Monchique - The Top Of The Algarve

Serra de Monchique – The Real Portugal

Serra de Monchique, the stunning mountain range between the Algarve and Alentejo. Well known as the Top of the Algarve or the Garden of the Algarve.

Step back in time to the real Portugal. Sleepy mountain town, settled between the mountains Fóia and Picota with a pretty square, cobbled streets, little shops, bars, restaurants, crafts, honey, fire water, farms and  lovely people.

Just 40 minutes away to the nicest beaches of Portugal, be it the wild west coast, well known by surfers, or the warmer south coast.

Monchique and Surroundings

Monchique, a small market town situated in the Serra de Monchique, the mountain range just above the Algarve  with amazing views over valleys and forests down to the sea, settled between the two highest mountains Fóia (902mtrs.) and Picota (702mtrs,)

Monchique Handicraft

Monchique Handicraft

You find everything you need for a laid back, relaxing holiday in the town of Monchique. There are a lot of little shops and some small supermarkets, different kinds of handicraft shops, butchers, with products such as free range black pig, a daily market where every Friday there is a special emphasis on organic food and of course there are banks, a post-office, chemists, doctors, dentists, a hospital, hairdressers and some boutiques.

In the centre of Monchique is a nice square with cafes and a park.

In the last few years the Serra de Monchique has become popular with walkers and bikers, there are many signposted trails with different levels of difficulty and some trails for cultural walks to mills, chapels, monumental trees and waterfalls.

Taking a holiday in Monchique doesn’t mean you have to stay away from the beach. A 30 to 40 min. drive brings you to either  the west or  the southcoast with a big selection of wonderful beaches.

Laguna at Praia da Amoreira

We love to go to the west coast, specially in high season when the beaches at the south coast have more visitors. If you like to surf we recommend Praia Amado or Praia de Arrifana and if you looking for good beach to bring your kids you should go to Praia da Amoreira which has a nice lagoon sheltered from the big waves where even toddlers can safely enjoy the  freedom to play in the water.
